There are two primary ways people will find your content or your business online.

  • They will stumble across you via a search engine such as Google.
  • They will interact with you because of a relationship you have developed in a social network such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc.

Make sure that you can be found in both places.

A well constructed social media platform means that you can be found by both options.  For example, each time you post a blog, there is a plug in for WordPress that allows a host of SEO phrases and Titles to be added to your post that will assist Google in listing you and people finding you in terms of those phrases.  Each time you blog you increase your chances of being listed higher in Google rankings and being found by prospective clients.

And when strangers do stumble across you in a search engine, give them some reason to want to interact with you or your company in a more formal basis.

  • Have your social media links apparent and easy to find on your website.
  • Have your newsletter opt in button prominent and easy to find, and offer them a good reason to subscribe to yet another piece of virtual literature.
  • Let them know who you are – show your picture.  Don’t hide behind a company logo or present your company instead of yourself on LinkedIn.  People do business with people, and they want to know who it is that they are dealing with.  The more you pretend to be ‘professional’ by hiding yourself or your staff and being remote, the more suspicious you look and it appears that you are hiding something and clients will move on to a site where they feel comfortable and welcome.

Once you have created that relationship, build on it over time.  The investment will bring its own returns and is worth more than the hit and miss efforts of potential quick sales by being on the first page of Google.
